◊ Well, you know the remix fic challenges-
No.
◊ oh. Well, a couple of years ago I had the idea that it might be neat to set up a challenge where people could rewrite somebody else's story. The idea became pretty popular and pretty soon there were remix challenges everywhere.
Okay. What does that have to do with art?
◊ The other day I was looking at some of my old fanart and I thought about redoing it to see how much my style had changed over the years. Then I thought, well, gee, wouldn't it be swell if I could see what it would look like in a completely different style? And so a new remix challenge was born.
But people draw the same stuff all the time. Just the other day I saw four different pictures of Harry in Umbridge's detention.
◊ Good point, and that actually has to do with one of the rules- no remixing of canonical fanart.
One of the rules? How many are there?
◊ Not many, really. We're pretty easy going about this.
• No remixing of canonical fanart- we want to see your re-imagining of another artist's scene, not JKR's.Okay, so we can't change anything about the original picture? Then what's the point?
• No switching of characters- if you like the Harry/Ron piece by Suzy Artist but want to substitute Ron for Draco, DON'T. Either stick with who she has in the picture or choose another one. And don't change the action of the picture. Keep the poses the same.
• Along the same lines, don't change the setting of the piece. If Suzy Artist's Harry/Ron piece is on the quidditch field, don't stick them on an 18th-century pirate ship. Leave them be.
• Each artist needs to have at least five pieces of non-canon art.
• You can choose a piece that's just a single character, but try to choose one with some interesting action in the picture. If Suzy Artist has a picture that's just Snape standing still against a white background, please don't pick that. Choose the one where he's standing still in the potions room, watching over a bubbling cauldron.
• If you are underage or otherwise unable to legally view NC-17 work, for the love of all that is Potter, do NOT remix a piece that is.
◊ First, the point is seeing what something looks like in a different style. The graphic you see at the top is a perfect example- two pictures of Harry in the same pose, but by two different artists.
But they're not exactly the same. They're facing different directions.
◊ Well, that was done mostly for design purposes.
Okay, fine, but still. We can't change anything?
◊ You can't change anything that we feel would define the picture- characters, setting, action. There are other things you can play around with, though. Medium is a rather obvious one. You can also change the perspective of the picture- put that abstract reasoning part of your brain to work! You could also change the tone of the picture, which is a little more challenging. You could make a fluffy picture a tense one, or add subtext where there is none, but do so without completely changing the 'story' behind the picture.
What if there's a piece I don't want to see redone? And what about my commissioned pieces?
◊ The artists will be allowed to choose one piece they don't want to be remixed. They can also specify that work done for commissions is off-limits.
Do I need to have a website?
◊ Well, how else would people be able to see your art? It doesn't have to be your own personal site, but there has to be somewhere online where someone can view your work.
So I can just choose whichever artist I want to remix?
◊ Nope, sorry. Artists will be assigned randomly by me, and the artist you receive will not be the same as the one who received you.
Will I know who's remixing me?
◊ Not until that person posts the assignment. I think it's a little more fun to keep things a surprise like that.
Are there any sort of deadlines?
◊ Why yes, there are! Sign-up for the remix is open until 11:59 PM EDT July 17. Assignments will be handed out sometime on Monday, July 19. The art is due by 11:59 PM EDT October 8.
What if I get it done before then?
◊ That's fine. We'll accept art anytime before then, but no later.
Should I email it to you when I'm done?
◊ No, you can go ahead and post it in the community. Be sure to use the posting template found on the community userinfo page.
Oh yeah? What if I miss the deadline? Then what're you gonna do?
◊ Well, I'm not going to hound you for the art. I've got better things to do. But I will make a post on the community after the deadline saying which people still owe art. And if the community members take it upon themselves to do something about it, well, I'm not going to stop them.
That's kind of mean.
◊ Why, yes, yes it is.
